My time spent at Cedarville was huge in my development as a coach This is a drill that we did on a fairly regular basis. The beauty of this drill is that it incorporates smaller numbers, leading to more touches while also building to the full 5 on 5 game.
The drill itself is pretty simple to complete, here are the basic rules:
Set Up: 2 teams of 5 players, 1 team of 5 begins on the baseline (defense), and the other 5 are at half court (offense).
Step 1: 2 offensive players take the floor, and 2 defensive players follow suit. Live 2 on 2 commences, each team having a chance to score either by getting a basket or a stop. Each is worth 1 point. Each time after a point is scored, 2 new players must take the floor from each team while the other 2 head to the back of the line. There are 5 possessions in this 2 on 2 sequence, whatever team gets 3 is the winner and gets a “point”.
Step 2: The team at half court sprints to the baseline and the baseline team sprints to half court. This time, 3 players from each team take the floor, again playing for a score or stop and then subbing out after each possession. This same pattern continues to full 5 on 5.
Step 3: See which team has the most “points” at the end of the 5 on 5 sequences. If there is a tie, jump the ball at center court and play sudden death. The first team to score is the winner.
Below you will find a video of the drill being donThe e by my current 17U team. Enjoy!
